Lörrach to vote on expanding school social services amid rising student needs
Expanded Support for Students: Lörrach Plans to Strengthen School Social Work
The city of Lörrach is planning to expand school social services at several schools. On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the city council will vote on increasing staffing levels at Hellberg School, Pestalozzi School, and Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium. The proposal is based on a needs assessment conducted by the Lörrach district.
According to the city, schools are facing growing challenges, including rising mental health struggles, academic pressure, social difficulties, and an increasing number of children with migration and refugee backgrounds. Digital media use and family-related stressors are also playing a larger role.
Specifically, social work staffing at Hellberg School in Brombach is set to increase to 140%, at Pestalozzi School to 70%, and at Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium to 130%. Demand is particularly high at Hellberg School due to rising student numbers and a migration rate exceeding 60%.
The additional positions are scheduled to be implemented starting January 2027, provided funding is secured. Current estimates place the city's annual additional costs at around €12,600, with the district covering part of the expenses.
The initiative aims to expand counseling, prevention, and support in schools, ensuring greater long-term stability for students and staff.
