L'Oreal Aims to Revolutionize Ingredient Sourcing by 2030

L'Oreal, the world's largest cosmetics company, has outlined ambitious plans to revolutionize its ingredient sourcing by 2030. During a panel at the Nest Climate Campus during Climate Week 2025, moderated by Shyla Raghav of TIME, L'Oreal executives and partners discussed their commitment to sustainable cultivation, biotechnology, and vertical farming.

The panel highlighted L'Oreal's shift from wild picking to farming key ingredients like Centella Asiatica, ensuring a secure supply without exacerbating environmental issues. This move is part of L'Oreal's corporate sustainability program, 'L'Oreal for the Future', aiming to source over 75% of ingredients from nature or recycled sources by the end of this decade.

L'Oreal is collaborating with innovative startups to achieve this goal. Plantible, based in rural West Texas, has demonstrated significant social and economic benefits, increasing median household income by 61% through its sustainable practices. Plantible extracts Rubisco protein from Lemna, a highly sustainable aquatic plant that doubles in mass every 48 hours. Meanwhile, Interstellar Lab's AI-controlled greenhouse systems, Biopods, accelerate plant growth and save 99% of water usage.

The panel addressed the misconception that green ingredients perform worse than traditional ones, stressing that they perform equally well or even better. L'Oreal engages with external startups, academics, and VCs for cross-industry collaboration to scale sustainable innovations.

By 2030, L'Oreal aims to 'massify' green ingredients across its value chain, integrating sustainable cultivation, biotechnology, and vertical farming. Through partnerships and innovative technologies, the company is committed to reducing its environmental impact while maintaining high product quality. These efforts are part of L'Oreal's broader commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.
