Krefeld's forgotten gem reborn as Saal X blends history with modern life
A historic building in Krefeld is being transformed into a mixed-use space after years of neglect. The project, led by Claudia Schmidt and a team of experts, aims to revive the city’s architectural heritage while creating modern living and working areas. The renovation has already uncovered hidden features, including an ornate hall dating back to the 19th century.
The building at Karlsplatz 8, now named Saal X, was once a bustling restaurant. Its ceiling bears an 1896 inscription, hinting at its long history. Recent renovations revealed a grand hall with intricate stucco work and a cast-iron column, previously hidden behind layers of neglect.
The project is part of a broader effort by the nonprofit *Stadtreparatur Krefeld* to encourage property owners to restore historic structures. Claudia Schmidt, co-author of a cultural analysis of Krefeld’s city centre, highlights the potential of such restorations to attract more residents. Many nearby buildings, including those around the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, gained heritage protection in the 1980s, preserving their original character. The team, including architect Holger Brincks and conservator Christoph Tölke, is reusing existing materials where possible. They are also testing vacuum glazing to improve energy efficiency. The goal is to blend old and new, creating a space that serves both residential and commercial or hospitality purposes.
Once complete, Saal X will stand as a model for sustainable urban renewal. The project demonstrates how historic buildings can be adapted for modern use while retaining their original charm. Its success could inspire further restorations, helping to revitalise Krefeld’s city centre.
