French cinema in turmoil as 2,000 artists protest Bolloré's media dominance
A growing dispute has erupted in France over media mogul Vincent Bolloré’s expanding influence in the film industry. Over 2,000 film professionals and artists have now signed an open letter accusing him of threatening French cinema’s independence. The row has drawn responses from both industry leaders and cultural commentators. The conflict began when 600 film professionals published an open letter in early June. They claimed Bolloré, the main shareholder of Canal+, was contributing to the 'fascistisation' of public opinion through his media control. The collective behind the letter, 'Zapper Bolloré', later clarified it was not an attack on Canal+ staff but solely on Bolloré himself.
The number of signatories quickly grew to 2,000. In response, Canal+ director Maxime Saadé announced the channel would no longer collaborate with any of them. The dispute intensified as Bolloré recently acquired 34% of UGC, France’s third-largest cinema chain, with plans to take full ownership by 2028.
Critics argue this move could give him dominance over film financing, production, and distribution. A separate opinion piece in Libération also called for a 'cultural resistance' against the far-right National Rally (RN), signed by 1,000 artists and intellectuals. The debate has revived references to France’s 'cultural exception'—a policy championed by former Socialist president François Mitterrand and culture minister Jack Lang to protect French artistic independence. The dispute highlights deep concerns over media consolidation and its impact on French cinema. Bolloré’s growing control over key industry sectors has sparked fears about artistic freedom and political influence. For now, the standoff continues, with no sign of resolution between the signatories and Canal+ leadership.
