Digital Monitoring in Development Cooperation
The Stiftung Menschen für Menschen foundation has launched a new digital tool to improve its aid work in rural Ethiopia. Developed in-house, the Monitoring & Evaluation App will replace outdated paper-based systems from January 1, 2026. The move aims to streamline data collection and reduce errors in the organisation’s long-running development projects.
For nearly 45 years, the Munich-based foundation has supported Ethiopia in areas like water, education, and sustainable farming. Until now, project managers relied on printed Excel sheets, which often led to delays and mistakes.
The app was built using R, Python, and SQL, running entirely in a web browser. Data is stored securely on a virtual server managed by Menschen für Menschen. Pilot testing took place in mid-2025, with field staff praising its ease of use and efficiency.
A key feature is real-time data validation. The system automatically checks entries against project targets and highlights inconsistencies for quick correction. Field teams can now input and verify information directly on-site, ensuring faster and more reliable reporting.
By consolidating planning and reporting into one central system, the app gives managers instant access to up-to-date progress data. This helps them align activities more closely with the foundation’s goals across all operations.
The rollout begins on January 1, 2026, marking a shift from manual record-keeping to digital monitoring. The app’s automated checks and centralised data are expected to improve decision-making in rural development projects. Field staff will no longer face the delays and inaccuracies of paper-based reporting.
