Delaware State University Launches First HBCU Helicopter Flight Training Program
Delaware State University (DSU) has become the first Historically Black College and University to offer a four-year Helicopter Flight Training Program. Launched in 2023, the initiative provides students like Aaron Goines with a direct path to becoming Army aviators—complete with scholarships covering tuition and flight costs. The program, designed in partnership with the Army, has already seen success since its start. Students progress rapidly from classroom lessons to practical flying experience, operating helicopters as part of their daily training.
Participants work toward five key certifications: private pilot, instrument rating, commercial licence, and certified flight instructor (CFI). This structured approach ensures they gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills. Aaron Goines, a sophomore in the program, is focused on achieving his goal of becoming an Army pilot. His training reflects the programme’s blend of academic study and real-world flying. Kelvin Lesene, DSU’s director of aviation programs, emphasises the need for mature, dedicated students. The programme’s unique setup allows undergraduates to shift seamlessly between lectures and helicopter controls, offering an immersive learning experience.
The initiative not only supports students financially but also prepares them for military aviation careers. With its hands-on training and certification pathway, the programme continues to attract aspiring pilots like Goines. DSU remains the only HBCU providing this specialised four-year course.
