Zhejiang University dethrones Harvard as the world's top research institution

Zhejiang University has overtaken Harvard as the world's most productive research institution. The Leiden Rankings, released in January 2025, placed the Chinese university at the top after it published 40,492 scientific papers between 2020 and 2023. This milestone reflects China's growing influence in global academic research and a culture of intense study among its students.

The university's rise to the top spot follows decades of rapid expansion in China's research output. While Harvard produced over 36,000 papers in the same period, Zhejiang's publication rate pushed it ahead. The shift marks the first time a Chinese institution has led this ranking, ending Harvard's long-standing dominance.

Local students at Zhejiang face a far tougher path to admission than many international applicants. The selection process is gruelling, and once enrolled, they maintain a disciplined approach to their studies. Evenings and weekends are often spent in libraries or study groups, with little room for complacency. Grading is strict, with even minor mistakes in pronunciation or written characters affecting final marks.

For those who gain entry, the academic environment remains demanding. Courses cover a broad range of subjects, from intensive language training to specialised lectures on Chinese history and law. One former student recalled a seminar on the struggles of Chinese peasants and another on the country's legal system, both taught with a global perspective. Despite the pressure, campus life offers comforts—modern dormitories with private bathrooms and affordable, high-quality meals costing as little as 2 USD (1.70 EUR).

The contrast with Western universities is striking. Many Chinese students approach their work with a level of seriousness that surpasses what is often seen in American institutions. The depth of the talent pool and the relentless drive for excellence create an atmosphere where academic achievement is both expected and pursued rigorously.

Zhejiang University's new ranking highlights its role as a powerhouse in global research. The institution's combination of high academic standards, extensive resources, and student dedication has propelled it past long-established rivals. With China's research output continuing to grow, the university's position at the top may signal a broader shift in the landscape of higher education.
