Young teachers head to remote villages under Armenia's 'Teach for Future' programme
A decade-old initiative in Armenia is tackling teacher shortages by sending young professionals to remote schools. The Teach for the Future of Armenia programme, part of the global Teach for All network, has trained 450 graduates over the past ten years. Each year, around 50 specialists are selected to teach in underserved villages and towns across the country.
The programme attracts hundreds of applicants annually. Arshak Poghosyan, who oversees university collaborations, receives between 250 and 300 applications from students each year. Yet only 7–8% of candidates pass the rigorous selection process, which includes a mandatory training course before deployment.
Once accepted, teachers receive both a school salary and an additional allowance, resulting in a competitive income. One such teacher is Mané Mkrtchyan, a programmer and information security specialist. She now teaches algebra and geometry to students in grades 6 to 10 at Dovegh village school in Tavush province—a school that previously had no mathematics teacher. Anna Hovhannisyan leads the university programme and is currently expanding its reach. In 2024, she launched a mentorship scheme for students in Yerevan. An ongoing digital skills initiative for educators across Armenia, running since 2025, further supports teachers in remote areas.
The initiative has placed 450 trained professionals in schools over the last decade. Selected teachers fill critical gaps in subjects like mathematics while earning a stable income. The programme continues to grow, with new mentorship and digital training projects now underway.
