Yale’s FGLI Thrive Program Builds Community Through Events and Mentorship
Yale University's FGLI Thrive Program, led by Pride, has been actively supporting first-generation, low-income (FGLI) students with a range of events and initiatives. The program, which has seen a rise in FGLI students due to inclusive admissions and financial aid, now serves 23 percent of the student body.
The FGLI Thrive Program has hosted various events to foster community and professional growth. Highlights include a formal event in February 2024, trips to New York City with Morgan Stanley executives, and a fall break recreation trip to the Connecticut Post Mall. The program also facilitated community gatherings during National First-Generation, Low-Income Week, including 'buttery buy-outs' and professional headshot opportunities. An upcoming event is the annual FGLI Yale-Harvard mixer, in collaboration with Yale First-Gen and Low Income Advocacy Movement and Harvard's Primus group, during the Yale-Harvard football game weekend. Additionally, a new FGLI podcast is in the works, with the first episode featuring Joliana Yee, director of the Asian American Cultural Center.
Dean of Yale College Pericles Lewis has noticed a more welcoming campus due to the increase in FGLI students. Kalina Sabala Montes '28, however, found a stronger FGLI community in larger groups like dance group Sabrosura or cultural spaces like La Casa, preferring these over smaller events organized by FGLI Thrive.
The FGLI Thrive Program continues to grow and adapt, offering a wide range of events and initiatives to support FGLI students at Yale. With the number of FGLI students increasing, the program plays a crucial role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus.
