Yale Cuts Undergraduate Funding, Merges Summer Grants Amid Budget Strains
Yale College Dean Pericles Lewis has announced significant changes to undergraduate funding opportunities. The International Study Award and Summer Experience Award will merge into a single Summer Experience Grant, effective summer 2027. This move comes amidst budgetary pressures and a potential endowment tax hike, threatening general financial aid priorities.
Currently enrolled undergraduate students will retain their aid packages, but the reduction of two non-competitive undergraduate funding opportunities to one after summer 2026 may impact future students. Starting in 2027, the Summer Experience Grant will provide one non-competitive funding opportunity for students on financial aid, excluding those who have previously used non-competitive awards.
Students who have used either the International Study Award or Summer Experience Award in a previous summer may still apply for the other award for summer 2026. However, the new Summer Experience Grant will not fund non-Yale programs abroad or international professional experiences, disappointing some students who rely on these opportunities. The Office of International and Summer Programs will, however, expand Yale Summer Session programs in less commonly taught languages, eligible for the new grant.
Details about the application process for the 2027 Summer Experience Grant will be announced in summer 2026.
The merger of the International Study Award and Summer Experience Award into the Summer Experience Grant is set to impact Yale undergraduate students' funding opportunities. While current students' aid packages remain unchanged, future students may face reduced options due to budgetary pressures and endowment tax hikes.
