XJTLU Unveils Groundbreaking Immersive Dome Cinema at MEGA Festival 2025
Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) unveiled a cutting-edge immersive dome cinema on 18 December 2025. The launch coincided with the fifth MEGA International Creative Media Festival, which this year adopted an 'Immersion' theme. The event also marked the founding of the International Immersive Media Creation Alliance, further solidifying XJTLU’s role in advancing creative technology.
The new regal cinema features an 18-metre dome with 8K resolution visuals and a self-illuminating LED display. Its 110°×180° wraparound field of view, combined with a fully enveloping sound system, creates a deeply engaging digital environment. Designed for teaching, research, and creative projects, the regal cinema aims to push boundaries in media innovation.
The fifth MEGA festival, themed around film, digital media arts, and creative technology, introduced new categories for AI-generated content and short-form video. Organisers received 1,384 submissions from 14 countries and regions, highlighting the event’s expanding global influence. The opening ceremony livestream alone drew over 2.07 million viewers.
Alongside the festival, a themed summit titled Immersive Future: Scene Revolution and Value Innovation Driven by Immersive Media explored the transformative impact of these technologies. The same day also saw the establishment of the International Immersive Media Creation Alliance, initiated by XJTLU’s Academy of Film and Creative Technology.
The launch of the regal cinema and the festival’s record engagement underscore XJTLU’s growing influence in creative media. The new alliance and expanded competition categories reflect a broader shift toward integrating immersive and AI-driven content. These developments position the university at the forefront of digital innovation in education and entertainment.
