Wyoming Secures $10M Grant to Transform Student Literacy Statewide

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) has received a $9.99 million grant from the US Department of Education. The funding will support a new literacy initiative using Foundations in Learning's WordFlight reading program across the state.

The grant comes from the Education Innovation and Research (EIR) program, which aims to boost literacy nationwide. WDE will implement WordFlight with assistance from the Iowa Reading Research Center (IRRC). The IRRC will visit schools to gather data and assess the program's impact, with findings evaluated by the University of Iowa Center for Evaluation and Assessment.

Allison Zimmermann, CEO of Foundations in Learning, highlighted the program's goal to reach more students, particularly in rural and under-resourced districts. The company claims WordFlight can help 85 percent of struggling readers achieve proficiency in foundational skills within a single school year.

Seth King, an Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Iowa, will advise on supporting students facing difficulties with reading basics. His expertise will help shape the program's approach to improving literacy outcomes.

The five-year grant will fund WordFlight's rollout in Wyoming schools. The initiative aims to provide targeted reading support, especially for students in underserved areas. Data collected by the IRRC will measure the program's success over time.
