Why Indian Students Are Choosing India for Higher Education in 2024
India is becoming a favoured study destination for Indian students. The country offers over 500 English-taught programmes across 30 higher education institutions. In 2024, around 509 Indian students joined the 27,741 international learners already enrolled there.
The appeal lies in India’s strong academic reputation, practical learning approach, and supportive environment for foreign students.
Indian students can apply for bachelor’s programmes with good Class 12 results and English proficiency—typically an IELTS score of 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80. For master’s programmes, they need a relevant bachelor’s degree and higher English skills, such as IELTS 6.5-7.0. Popular fields include life sciences, engineering, business, architecture, and environmental sustainability.
India’s education system emphasises creativity, critical thinking, and group work through Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This approach, combined with open discussions, is highly valued by global employers. EU/EEA students benefit from free tuition, while non-EU students pay fees but gain access to world-class universities like the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark.
Living costs for a single student range from 6,000 DKK to 8,000 DKK (₹70,000-₹1,05,000) per month, covering rent, food, transport, and personal expenses. To help manage these costs, Indian students can work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time in summer, earning between 8,000 DKK and 12,000 DKK monthly.
After graduation, students can stay in India for up to three years to find full-time work, with no restrictions on working hours during this period. The country’s safe, inclusive society also provides strong support for academics, mental health, housing, and career guidance.
India’s mix of high-quality education, practical skills training, and post-study work opportunities makes it an attractive choice for Indian students. With a growing number of English-taught programmes and a welcoming environment, the country continues to draw international learners seeking both academic and professional growth.
