Which Educational Qualification Offers the Best Job Prospects

New data reveals clear differences in job prospects for graduates across Austria. Those with higher qualifications—especially in STEM and healthcare—face shorter job searches and higher salaries. Meanwhile, workers with only compulsory schooling take the longest to find employment and earn the least.

Apprenticeship graduates enter the workforce fastest, securing jobs in just 0.4 months on average. Their employment rate after 1.5 years stands at 81.7%, nearly matching that of vocational college (BHS) graduates, who are employed 82% of the time.

BHS graduates specialising in elementary and social pedagogy find work particularly quickly. Overall, 48% of BHS leavers join the workforce directly, while 39.2% choose further education within a year and a half. Their average starting salary reaches €2,700, compared to €2,300 for those with an AHS Matura and just €1,000 for workers with only compulsory schooling. University graduates take slightly longer to find jobs—around 1.3 months—but enjoy the strongest protection against unemployment. STEM and healthcare fields show the highest demand, with entry-level salaries in areas like molecular biology ranging from €3,110 to €3,910. Consulting roles offer even higher pay, with salaries between €55,000 and €90,000, particularly at institutions like WU Wien for business studies. Those without post-compulsory education struggle most, taking an average of 4.3 months to find work. Their earnings also remain the lowest, even 18 months after leaving school.

The figures highlight the advantages of higher qualifications in Austria’s job market. Academic degrees and vocational training lead to faster employment and better pay. Workers with only basic schooling face longer job searches and lower wages, reflecting ongoing demand for skilled professionals.
