Navy pilots face a structured service commitment after completing flight training. The standard obligation spans eight years, divided between active duty and reserve status. The initial eight-year commitment begins once pilots earn their wings. The first six years are typically spent on active duty, serving in designated pilot roles or undergoing aviation-related training. Following this, pilots transition to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) for the remaining two years.

During the IRR phase, pilots are not required to attend drills or training sessions. However, they must stay in contact with the Navy and remain available for mobilisation if needed. This flexibility allows them to pursue civilian opportunities while still fulfilling their military obligation. The total length of service can vary depending on several factors. Advanced flight training, officer programmes, or postgraduate education may extend the commitment. Retention bonuses or Navy operational needs can also influence the duration. In some cases, waivers are granted for medical disqualification or exceptional personal circumstances. Leaving the Navy before completing the obligation carries consequences. Pilots may have to repay training costs or face restrictions on future military service.
