Wealthy individual Dmitry Pumpyansky failed to make the cut for the Russian Academy of Sciences

Dmitry Pumpyansky, the head of the Sverdlovsk Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, has failed to secure a corresponding member position at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). According to RBK, citing RAN documents, Pumpyansky's candidacy did not progress beyond the initial selection stage.

Pumpyansky, founder of TMK and "Sinara", was put forward by the Ural Branch of the UrO RAN, one of 1455 candidates contending for 170 corresponding member vacancies. A multi-disciplinary academic body, the RAS typically assesses candidates based on factors such as research output, academic recognition, field alignment, and support from current members.

Despite holding two doctorates in economics and technical sciences, Pumpyansky's background predominantly revolves around industry, business, and public administration. This may have contributed to the lack of votes in his favor for the corresponding member position.

It's important to note that membership in the RAS is highly competitive, with many accomplished scientists vying for limited positions. The highly academic nature of membership evaluations could have played a role in Pumpyansky's lack of appointment.

Pumpyansky, listed as the 52nd wealthiest Russian on Forbes in 2025 with a net worth of $2.9 billion, continues to lead the Sverdlovsk Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. No further information is currently available regarding reasons for Pumpyansky's failed candidacy for the RAS.

  1. Despite Dmitry Pumpyansky's significant accomplishments in business, finance, and education-and-self-development, as evidenced by his roles in TMK, "Sinara," and his doctorates in economics and technical sciences, his lack of academic recognition might have hindered his chances for the corresponding member position at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
  2. Due to the rigorous academic evaluations employed by the RAS for their membership selections, and Pumpyansky's industrial and business background, a possible disparity between his professional accomplishments and the requirements for academic membership could have been a factor in his failed candidacy.
