Vietnam’s Engineers Transform Abyei with Roads, Airfields and Community Support

Vietnam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 3 has returned home after completing a successful deployment with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The team received high praise for their work, including a commendation letter from UNISFA leadership. Their mission included critical infrastructure projects and community support in the region.

The unit’s deployment followed earlier operations in Afghanistan and Algeria between 1965 and 1973. This time, they focused on improving transport and safety in Abyei.

Over eight months, they repaired and maintained over 240km of roads, ensuring reliable movement of goods and fuel. They also opened new routes to remote bases, ending seasonal isolation for local communities.

Beyond roadwork, the team upgraded the Abyei airstrip and helicopter pads using K-31 technology. This ensured safer air transport for personnel and supplies. Additionally, they provided essential goods and renovated public facilities as part of community support efforts.

The Viet Nam Department of Peacekeeping Operations officially welcomed the officers back after their mission. Their work in Abyei included road repairs, new transport routes, and improved air infrastructure. The unit’s achievements were formally recognised by UNISFA leadership before their return.
