Vietnamese Language Day announced to strengthen global cultural ties by 2026

A recent event in Hà Nội celebrated efforts to promote the Vietnamese language worldwide. Organised by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, it connected online with over 150 locations across the globe. The gathering also marked the announcement of Vietnamese Language Day, set for 28 March 2026. At the event, Chairman Nguyễn Trung Kiểm stressed the role of language in preserving cultural identity and aiding integration. Deputy Foreign Minister Lê Thị Thu Hằng echoed this, calling for stronger efforts to teach and spread Vietnamese abroad.

Two language ambassadors shared their experiences of promoting Vietnamese in foreign communities. Six ambassadors were recognised in 2025, receiving medals and book collections for their contributions. Looking ahead, the 2026 programme will focus on honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to Vietnamese language and culture. Plans include launching a free teaching channel, offering 30 training courses for community teachers, and developing AI-based learning tools. Academic conferences and a national report on overseas Vietnamese teaching are also scheduled. The Vietnam Education Publishing House and VTV4 signed a cooperation agreement to expand language programmes for international audiences. However, official figures on the number of countries involved in these initiatives remain unavailable.

The 2026 programme will introduce new tools and recognition for those advancing Vietnamese language education. With a dedicated day, digital resources, and training support, the government aims to strengthen cultural ties through language. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to connect overseas communities with their heritage.
