Vienna’s Bold Plan to Transform Ageing with Precision Prevention
Vienna has launched a major new health initiative, the Vienna Prevention Project (ViPP), to address the challenges of an ageing population. This project brings together the city government, the Medical University of Vienna, and the Vienna Health Insurance Institution (KFA). Its aim is to improve long-term health through advanced preventive care, helping people live longer with fewer diseases and better quality of life.
The project will study 20,000 Viennese residents from diverse backgrounds. Participants will be split into two groups: one receiving regular screening programmes, the other undergoing basic health checks. Researchers will track their health over time to identify the most effective prevention strategies.
ViPP will use the latest methods in molecular and clinical medicine, following a precision medicine approach. By tailoring prevention to individual needs, the initiative hopes to reduce age-related illnesses and ease pressure on health, care, and social services. The goal is not just to extend life expectancy but to ensure those extra years are spent in good health. The project responds to rising life expectancy and the growing burden of chronic diseases.
