Vermont's School Redistricting Task Force Races to Meet Dec. 1 Deadline

Vermont's school redistricting task force is under pressure to meet a Dec. 1 deadline. They must submit three maps outlining new school district boundaries for the state's public education system. The task force began reviewing a draft map for the first time since its August launch.

The task force is exploring various mapping methods. These include organizing around existing county boundaries, regional high schools, and regional BOCES. They are also considering a proposal by Sen. Scott Beck, R-Caledonia, and Dave Wolk. Their map suggests 14 school districts mirroring the state's 15 career and technical education regions.

One hypothetical district would combine two service regions in northwest Vermont. The goal is to consolidate the state's current 119 districts into 10 to 25 future districts. The task force is required to propose up to three map possibilities to the Legislature.

The task force is facing a tight timeline and significant responsibility. Their work will greatly impact Vermont's public education system. They are considering multiple mapping methods and proposals to meet the Dec. 1 deadline. The final maps will help reshape the state's school districts.
