USD's Ocean Science Explorers Inspires Young Minds, Boosts Science Scores

The University of San Diego's Ocean Science Explorers project has been inspiring young minds, with sixth-graders from Wilson Middle School recently participating in a beach walk and aquarium visit. The program, a collaboration between Ocean Discovery Institute and UC San Diego, aims to prepare future scientific and environmental leaders to tackle climate change challenges.

Over four years, the program reaches 3,200 underserved students, providing hands-on science education and professional development to 115 teachers. Students learn about various science careers, including communicating science through social media and writing. On average, participants achieve a 47% increase on science tests.

The 'Change Over Time' curriculum covers earthquakes, paleontology, climate change, and ocean acidification. Students enjoy four in-class lessons, an outdoor field experience, and an environmental service project. Last year, the program provided science supplies and teacher training to 115 educators.

The Ocean Science Explorers project, a result of collaboration between Ocean Discovery Institute and UC San Diego, is making a significant impact. It not only engages and educates young students but also equips teachers with necessary resources. With its proven track record of improving science test scores, the program is well-positioned to continue fostering the next generation of scientific and environmental leaders.
