Swearing on Campus Grates on Ural Federal University's Vice Rector for Student Affairs

UrFU tightens language rules while boosting student family support

Alexander Ivanov, the vice rector for student affairs at Ural Federal University (UrFU), is pushing for stricter penalties against students who use profanity—including deductions from their academic performance scores and fines. But first, he'll have to wait for changes in federal law.

"The university must uphold linguistic standards. Yet I've encountered resistance—not everyone shares my view. In the halls of this institution, the rules of the Russian language must be observed," Ivanov declared during a meeting of UrFU's academic council.

Student families will now receive 200,000 rubles for having children. Currently, full-time female students at UrFU are granted 100,000 rubles per birth. Once a new federal support measure takes effect, the payout will rise to 300,000 rubles.
