University honors Christian Streich with a medal in Freiburg
Christian Streich, the renowned German football coach currently managing SC Freiburg, has been awarded the University Medal of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. The prestigious honour was bestowed upon him during the Alumni Day, in recognition of his significant social commitment and close connection to the university.
Before the award ceremony, Streich advocated passionately for democracy and human rights, urging university members to clearly represent and communicate these values. This stance against anti-democratic currents has significantly enhanced the university's reputation.
Prior to his coaching career, Streich studied German, history, and sports at the University of Freiburg. He comes from a family of craftsmen and, as a Hauptschüler, never expected to attend university. His university education proved to be a formative experience for him.
At a panel discussion with scientists, diplomats, cultural figures, and even a comedian Matthias Deutschmann, Streich spoke about his commitment to these values. The discussion also featured Nicola Brandt, the head of the OECD Berlin Center.
Chancellor Christina Leib emphasised that Streich stands for diversity, openness, and tolerance, qualities that are highly valued in both academia and sports. In January 2024, Streich held a press conference where he clearly positioned himself against right-wing extremism.
While the exact reasons for Streich's award are not yet publicly known, university medals are typically given to individuals who have made significant contributions to academia or the community, often in fields related to the university's focus areas. With Streich's demonstrated commitment to democracy, human rights, and social values, it seems his contributions align well with the university's values.
This honour adds to the long list of accolades Streich has received for his work both on and off the football field. As he continues to make a positive impact, we can expect to see more recognition of his efforts in the future.
