The image shows a site plan for a new school, with a map of the building and text detailing the layout of the school. The map is detailed, showing the various rooms, hallways, and other features of the campus. The text provides additional information about the school's layout, such as the number of students, the location of the classrooms, and the amenities.

Universities lag behind as AI reshapes online visibility strategies

Colleges and universities now face a growing challenge in improving their online visibility. As AI tools increasingly shape how information is shared, institutions must adapt their digital strategies to stay relevant in search results and AI-generated summaries.

Traditional search engine optimisation (SEO) is no longer enough. Two newer approaches—answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO)—are becoming essential. AEO focuses on creating web content that directly answers common questions, while GEO ensures accurate representation in AI overviews and chatbot responses.

Despite this shift, leading US universities have yet to publicly outline specific plans for SEO, AEO, or GEO. Harvard, Stanford, and MIT have not released detailed initiatives aimed at optimising their content for AI tools. Available records show Stanford hosting AI research seminars, such as RAIN, which explores algorithms and incentives. MIT offers executive programs on digital strategies involving AI, but these efforts do not explicitly address content optimisation for search or generative engines.

The gap suggests many institutions may still rely on broader AI research rather than targeted strategies for online visibility. Without clear action, their information risks being misrepresented or overlooked in AI-driven summaries.

Accurate AI-generated summaries depend on institutions actively refining their digital content. Without concrete steps in AEO and GEO, universities could lose control over how their programmes and research are presented online. The need for tailored strategies is becoming urgent as AI reshapes information discovery.
