Unity among Professional Women Empowered: The Influence They Wield in Council Establishment
The Professional Women in Building (PWB) councils, a vital part of various Home Builders Associations (HBAs) across the United States, are reshaping the home building industry through professional development, mentorship, and advocacy for change.
In Pierce County, Washington, the Master Builders Association's PWB in Tacoma hosts networking events at member's own businesses, fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. The PWB councils provide spaces for professional growth, relationship building, and advocacy for change.
One such example is the Metropolitan Builders and Contractors Association of New Jersey's (Metro) PWB council, led by former chair Linda Garvey. Garvey prioritised quality over quantity in meetings and events, ensuring that each gathering was productive and meaningful.
However, larger PWB councils run the risk of losing intimacy and connection among members. Smaller councils, like Metro's, offer more flexible programming due to limited resources and often make decisions faster due to fewer members.
The smaller size also allows for opportunities for collaboration between seasoned professionals and emerging leaders. Mentorship programs and intergenerational events bridge experience with innovation in the home building industry.
In Houston, Texas, the Greater Houston Builders Association's (GHBA) PWB served as the catalyst for the entire HBA's mentorship program. The GHBA's PWB sent their first-ever team of all female members to "Rally Day" at the state capital, demonstrating their commitment to advocacy.
Metro in New Jersey, with a diverse age range among its membership, offers a mix of fresh perspectives on technology and institutional knowledge. The best PWB councils merge inspiration, education, recreation, and connection, helping retain existing members and attract new ones.
The annual Ladies Who Lead Luncheon, held by an unspecified large PWB council, helps retain a level of closeness despite the council's size. These events, such as those hosted by the MBA's PWB in Pierce County, offer opportunities for one-on-one networking, small group discussions, and member presentations.
The voices of these PWB leaders reveal that when women in building come together, they build more than homes. The PWB councils are transforming the home building industry nationwide, creating a more inclusive and innovative environment.
