Man Overcomes Rare Condition to Pursue Dreams in the Kitchen
Darryl Hall, a resident of Chicago, has faced numerous challenges since his birth, but his resilience and determination have led him to success in his personal and professional life. Born with a rare condition called gastroschisis, which affects one in every 2,400 babies in the US, Hall has spent a significant part of his life battling its complications.
Gastroschisis causes the intestines to be outside the body because the abdominal wall didn't fully form in the womb. In Hall's case, the condition was complicated by ischemic bowel, a lack of vital blood flow to the abdominal organs. As a result, Hall developed short bowel syndrome, compromising his ability to take in adequate nutrition and hydration, requiring nutrition through an IV.
Hall's mother noticed the dreadful stench when he was 13 or 14, a symptom of the accumulation of D-lactic acid in the blood, known as D-lactic acidosis. This condition is caused by the inability to absorb carbohydrates, a common issue for those with short bowel syndrome, leading to D-lactic acid production in the abdomen.
Despite these challenges, Hall weaned himself from the feeding tube after bowel-lengthening surgery in his early elementary years. However, he still had dietary restrictions, avoiding foods with too much sugar or carbs. Hall's perseverance in overcoming obstacles has earned the admiration of his doctor, Boutte.
Hall found relief from the unpleasant aroma with a thrice-daily antibiotic prescription. Despite the indefinite period he will likely be on the antibiotic, Hall's condition has not stopped him from pursuing his passion. He expanded his palate significantly since he was a kid and became a line cook at a downtown Chicago hotel two years ago.
Now, Hall works in a Latin cuisine restaurant, where he noticed a lack of minority clientele. He wants everyone to enjoy the food and aims to open his own restaurant to give back to the community and showcase his hospitality. Hall is sharing his story during Gastroschisis Awareness Month in July and Gastroschisis Awareness Day on July 30 to raise awareness and support for those with gastroschisis.
Hall was treated by the Cleveland Clinic for his specific form of gastroschisis, where as a baby, he underwent surgery to repair the abdominal wall and remove a large portion of his small intestine, leaving him with only 30 centimeters. Despite these setbacks, Hall's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams.
