UNESCO Honors Sidhulai Floating School with 2025 Literacy Award

Sidhulai Floating School, a pioneering educational initiative in Bangladesh, has been honoured with the prestigious UNESCO Confucius Literacy Award 2025. The school, founded by engineer Mohammad Rezwan, brings education to students in the remote Chalanbeel wetland area.

Rezwan, inspired by his childhood in Chalanbeel, envisioned boat schools to overcome flood-related school closures. The Sidhulai Floating School, established in 2002, is powered by solar energy and includes libraries and training centres. It currently operates 18 boats, travelling to students' doorsteps.

The school's global impact is evident in its replication by various NGOs across Bangladesh and similar initiatives in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The Bangladesh government has also recognised its significance, including it in the National Adaptation Plan 2050. The school's success has brought joy to its students and teachers, who are committed to improving education quality.

Sidhulai Floating School's recognition with the UNESCO Confucius Literacy Award 2025 is a testament to its innovative approach to education. The school's impact extends beyond Bangladesh, inspiring similar initiatives worldwide. Engineer Mohammad Rezwan's vision continues to transform education in remote and challenging environments.
