UK rejoins Erasmus in 2025, reviving student exchanges by 2027

The UK will rejoin the Erasmus programme in 2025, opening doors for student exchanges once again. Austrian schools and universities can prepare for business partnerships, with the first mobility placements expected by mid-2027. The return follows years of limited cooperation after Brexit disrupted the scheme.

Before Brexit, the UK ranked among the top destinations for Austrian students, apprentices and teachers under Erasmus. But after the country left the programme, exchanges shifted to Ireland—now overwhelmed by demand from across Europe.

The UK's departure was driven by both cultural and financial factors. Since then, some British universities maintained limited Erasmus ties through their own initiatives and the international strand of Erasmus+. Schools, however, had no such options.

From 2025, the UK will re-enter Erasmus as a non-EU participant, effectively paying into all programme areas. Around 2,000 placements are targeted for the first year across education and youth sectors. Austrian institutions can restart partnerships from the 2027/28 academic year.

Students may begin Erasmus semesters in the UK by autumn 2027, with internships possibly available from summer 2027. But delays are likely as the UK rebuilds its managing agency and universities meet new requirements. Schools and universities are already advised to start forming links now.

The UK's return to Erasmus will restore a key exchange route for Austrian students and staff. While full exchanges won't resume until 2027, preparations are underway to rebuild partnerships. The move eases pressure on alternative destinations like Ireland, which have struggled with high demand since Brexit.
