UK and South Korea Strengthen Cybersecurity Ties Amid Rising Digital Threats
The British Ambassador to South Korea, Colin Crooks, has urged stronger cybersecurity ties between Seoul and London. His call comes as both nations face rising threats from increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. Cooperation in this area has already grown, with more frequent exchanges between officials and joint participation in international cyber defence exercises.
Over the past year, major companies in South Korea and the UK have fallen victim to damaging cyber incidents. One notable case involved SK Telecom, where an attack disrupted services for 23 million users. These incidents highlight the shared risks both countries now confront.
Regular discussions between British and South Korean officials have intensified, focusing on cyber defence strategies. The two nations have also taken part in multinational cyber exercises, such as Defence Cyber Marvel. This annual event, coordinated from Tallinn, Estonia, brings together teams from multiple countries—including Germany, which has participated since 2023. The fifth edition is scheduled for February 2026.
Ambassador Crooks emphasised the importance of deeper collaboration, pointing to the advanced cybersecurity ecosystems in both nations. He noted that closer cooperation would help address the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals.
The push for stronger cybersecurity ties reflects the growing scale of digital threats faced by both countries. With ongoing attacks targeting critical infrastructure and major corporations, Seoul and London are expected to expand joint efforts. Future collaboration will likely include more exercises, intelligence sharing, and policy coordination to counter cyber risks.
