Uganda's Brightest Minds Join Airtel's New Tech Fellowship for Innovation
Airtel Uganda has launched the #AirtelAfricaTechFellowship, a new programme designed to support young innovators across the country. The initiative was unveiled at an event held at Airtel Uganda's Bugolobi offices, attended by key industry leaders and stakeholders. Its goal is to empower Uganda's brightest minds and drive positive change in local communities and beyond.
The fellowship's first edition drew over 1,000 applicants from universities nationwide. After a rigorous selection process—including phone interviews and multiple assessments—20 outstanding candidates were chosen. Most of the selected participants hail from Makerere University, with others representing regional East African institutions.
The programme aims to nurture talent, encourage innovation, and develop Uganda's future technology leaders. Over the next five to ten years, organisers hope these fellows will contribute to societal transformation. Airtel Uganda has a history of investing in education and community development, from revamping primary schools to stocking libraries.
At the launch, dignitaries such as Hannington Karuhanga, Airtel Uganda Ltd Board Chairman, and Soumendra Sahu, the company's CEO and Managing Director, highlighted the fellowship's potential impact. Airtel Africa also collaborates with UNICEF to improve how children interact with digital tools, reinforcing its commitment to education and technology.
The #AirtelAfricaTechFellowship will provide a platform for young Ugandans to grow as innovators and leaders. The 20 selected fellows will now begin their journey, supported by Airtel's resources and mentorship. The programme's long-term success will depend on their contributions to Uganda's tech landscape and broader society.
