UB President Satish K. Tripathi to Step Down in 2026 After 15-Year Tenure
After 15 years at the helm, Satish K. Tripathi, the longest-serving president of the University at Buffalo since 1962, has announced his decision to step down in July 2026. Tripathi, who joined UB in 2004 and became its 15th president in 2011, will return to his faculty role in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Tripathi's departure comes after several months of contemplation. During his tenure, he significantly enhanced the educational experience for undergraduate and graduate students, fostering regional and global engagement. UB's research portfolio and sponsored research expenditures grew substantially under his leadership.
Tripathi's impact on UB's international presence is notable. He formalized partnerships with 31 international institutions, bringing the total to 95 in 34 countries. His efforts have elevated UB's stature as a premier public research university. Under his leadership, UB rose 22 spots among U.S. public universities and 44 spots among U.S. public and private universities in U.S. News & World Report rankings from 2010 to 2024. In 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul designated UB a New York State flagship institution.
Tripathi's stepping down in July 2026 will mark the end of an era at UB. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the university's academic standing and international reach. The search for his successor is underway, with no official announcement yet made.
