Let's Chat:

Two standout faculty members from the Wilson College of Textiles were honored on April 26 for their exceptional outreach efforts. Dr. Jeffrey Joines and Dr. Jesse Jur were bestowed the Alumni Association Outstanding Extension and Outreach Award.

Both academics qualified for the prestigious Alumni Association recognition after receiving the Outstanding Extension Service Awards from NC State University's Office of Outreach and Engagement and being inducted into the Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension. These awards aim to acknowledge and encourage extraordinary extension, engagement, and economic development activities by faculty and EHRA employees of NC State University.

Dr. Jeff Joines, an associate professor and department head for Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS), played a pivotal role in the establishment of a multi-year partnership between NC State and Hanesbrands Inc (HBI) in 2012. The partnership objectives included creating an on-campus presence for the company, cultivating a talent acquisition pipeline, and employing faculty and facilities to bolster company innovation. As the lead for NC State's side of the partnership, Dr. Joines has brought several million dollars to the university to support education by sponsoring student projects and matching students with HBI to address company challenges.

Besides his ongoing work with HBI, Dr. Joines delivers continuing professional education, encompassing Lean Six Sigma, Designing with Six Sigma, simulation concepts, and other industry-relevant topics. Furthermore, he has assisted numerous companies through the years with supply chain optimization and inventory modeling projects.

"Dr. Jeff Joines is nothing short of an NC State treasure," saidDr. Jon Rust, distinguished professor of Textile Engineering and interim director of Zeis Textiles Extension. "He is a leader within NC State, aiding NC companies through his outreach activities and their ability to create jobs in North Carolina. He provides training and educational services to professionals across the state while also being a renowned educator, as demonstrated by his impressive Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching last year."

Meanwhile, Dr. Jesse Jur, an assistant professor in TECS, co-directs and co-teaches the year-long capstone course for the Textile Engineering and Textile Technology degree programs: Senior Design. This program challenges student teams to tackle real-world industrial or research problems that necessitate using prior classwork to develop innovative solutions.

"Dr. Jesse Jur has been instrumental in securing industry sponsorship for Senior Design," said co-instructor Dr. Russell Gorga, associate department head for TECS and director of undergraduate programs. "He forges strong relationships with industry partners, ensuring effective communication between the sponsor and the student team."

The successes of Senior Design projects extend beyond student education. Industry sponsors benefit significantly, including new products, markets, patents, and licensed technology. Additionally, Dr. Jur's involvement with the NSF Nanosystems Engineering Research Center on Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) grants opportunities to collaborate with other institutions, educators, and students. Starting in 2013, he spearheaded the NSF-sponsored Research Experience for Teachers and Young Scholars program. In 2014, he initiated the ASSIST 'One Health Challenge', an in-class and after-school design competition for wearable electronics aimed at addressing the growing needs of human and animal health. In 2015, the program supported 200 students from 10 schools, culminating in a competition of 75 students (17 teams) at NC State.
