Earth Day was established on April 22, 1970, and Kathleen Rogers currently serves as the president of the organization that supports this annual event. In an interview with 'IL', she expressed that the upcoming 50th anniversary will emphasize the challenge of climate change. Rogers also stated that the outcome of the U.S. elections will decide whether America will continue its involvement in the Paris Agreement.

A Four-Minute Read

Fifty years ago, on April 22, 1970, the world witnessed the birth of Earth Day as 20 million Americans, amounting to 10% of the American population, filled the streets and university campuses to voice their concerns over environmental issues and to demand a new approach to planetary development. Marking the inception of modern environmentalism, the aftermath of the economic boom and mass industrialization had begun to reveal its damaging impact on the planet. The United States had recently been rocked by the Santa Barbara oil spill, with over 100,000 barrels of oil polluting California's coastlines. The peace movement was gathering momentum and drawing young people seeking change. In the fertile soil of the rights movements, activists like Denis Hayes and politicians such as Gaylord Nelson collaborated to organize the largest environmental protest in history. The event proved to be a success.

Originating in the United States, World Earth Day soon set roots across the globe, involving hundreds of millions of people. "The 1970 event was a historic moment," Kathleen Rogers, President of the Earth Day Network for 16 years, told IL. "The effects of the mobilization were immediately visible. The Republican President Nixon introduced that same year the Clean Air Act, federal legislation focusing on air quality, and created the Environmental Protection Agency, one of the first of its kind in the world. In the subsequent two years, the Clean Water Act and legislation for the protection of endangered species were enacted." Half a century has passed, during which time the April 22 anniversary has become a moment of reflection, awareness, and action in the environmental struggle, signifying many turning points. "A particularly memorable year was 2016, with the signing, on April 22, of the Paris climate agreement by 120 countries. Yet, the list of decisive actions taken by states and corporations is extensive and remains one of our greatest sources of pride."

The 50th anniversary places a special emphasis on the climate challenge, amidst a key year to evaluate the resilience of the Paris Agreement. "We have dedicated the entire year to the theme of climate and have called it Earth Year, aiming to mobilize over a billion people around the issue." Italy, according to Rogers, holds a central role in these efforts. "Your government will be the co-chair of the climate negotiations in November in Glasgow and was the first to advocate for climate education in schools, a theme on which the Network has also contributed."

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Earth Day celebrations may be scaled back this year. However, environmental activism is an ongoing endeavor encompassing individual actions throughout the 12 months. "I remember the first time I participated in an Earth Day, I was 25 years old. Active involvement in territory clean-up actions and public demonstrations fostered my environmental consciousness. And that's one of the gifts bestowed upon those who participate in Earth Day." When united, individuals feel stronger and more motivated, building an environmental ethic, inspiring choices, and prompting actions in daily life. "But I, too, must admit that I am an imperfect environmentalist, a character shared by many," Rogers admitted during our conversation. "I reside in a Washington DC area poorly served by public transportation, which necessitates me to drive. This realization feels guilt-inducing, but there is no alternative. However, there are numerous areas where one can make a difference—consuming less, proper recycling, avoiding meat consumption—every personal action matters, even when it appears insufficient."

It's not only individual responsibility, but also that of governments. "Rather than solely placing the blame on personal behaviors, let's remind ourselves of the true responsibilities that lie elsewhere." In the upcoming November elections, Americans will choose a new President. "We have launched a campaign called Vote Earth. In this critical year, apart from the U.S. elections, there are numerous elections scheduled worldwide. Some yielded negative outcomes, like in Australia, where a climate-sceptic right-wing administration was re-elected. Others offer opportunities. The climate should occupy a central position in these elections, and we are working hard to forge unity."
