Transforming Backyards into Multi-Purpose Outdoor Classrooms
Helen Reichardt, a campus specialist at HTWK Leipzig, has pioneered an innovative concept: transforming backyards into multi-purpose outdoor classrooms. This not only expands learning spaces but also offers a refreshing change from traditional indoor settings.
The core of Reichardt's idea is creating a flexible, weather-resistant foundation. This involves installing weather-resistant decking or rubber pavers for stability during both seated activities and movement-based learning. The space should be level, with proper drainage, and free from tripping hazards like tree roots.
To control sun exposure and create comfortable learning conditions, a retractable awning or shade sail system can be mounted. This allows for easy modification throughout the day. Outdoor whiteboards and chalkboard panels on hinges, along with portable clipboard stations, facilitate interactive learning. Weatherproof storage bins on wheels, with clear containers for easy identification, ensure organization of learning materials.
The space can be divided into distinct yet changeable areas such as a reading corner, science station, art area, and nature observation spot. Each area should have appropriate tools and materials. Lightweight, stackable chairs and foldable tables can be reconfigured for different activities, along with cushions, floor mats, and portable lap desks for various learning positions.
By selecting a 10x10 space with good drainage and a balance of natural shade and sunlight, Reichardt's concept creates an inspiring outdoor classroom where kids can learn, explore, and thrive in nature. This innovative approach expands the home's educational footprint, providing a refreshing alternative to traditional indoor settings.
