Title: Women's Lacrosse National Championship at UNC Indirectly Yields Financial Profits

Winning another national title in women's lacrosse won't result in a direct monetary increase for UNC. However, the value of adding another trophy to the collection remains significant.

University of North Carolina's Women's Lacrosse Team Wins Fourth NCAA National Championship

The University of North Carolina's women's lacrosse team clinched their fourth championship title in program history, defeating Northwestern 12-8 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. It marks the team's first victory since 2022 and adds to the university's trophy collection in non-revenue sports.

Despite the title not providing a direct financial boost like that of football or men's basketball, the win holds immense value, according to UNC Athletic Director, Bubba Cunningham. He stated, "The real benefit is building upon the brand of the University of North Carolina. Winning championships in our Olympic sports, particularly our women's sports, demonstrates that this is a great place to come and play."

Cunningham further asserted that the title would bolster fundraising efforts, especially as schools like UNC need to mobilize donor bases with the athlete revenue-sharing model on the horizon due to the House v. NCAA settlement. Progress has already been felt across the nation, with the University of Oklahoma recently laying off about 5% of its workforce as it adapts to incoming revenue-sharing policies.

As UNC prepares to pay athletes roughly $20 million annually, the university seeks to build endowments for its Olympic sports, like lacrosse, to create long-term sustainability. Annual operating budgets for UNC Olympic sports generally surpass $1 million, with women's lacrosse's budget reaching $1,870,475 during the 2023 fiscal year. UNC aims to reach a $20 million endowment for each of its Olympic sports, holding at least $1 million in endowment funds in each sport.

UNC boasted a record of $164 million in operating revenue during the 2023-2024 fiscal year, resulting in a $8.5 million profit. Key revenue sources include ticket sales, television, sponsorship, and philanthropy. Philanthropy plays a significant role in funding UNC Olympic sports, like women's lacrosse, which closed the season on a 22-game winning streak.

Although UNC may not spend as much on women's lacrosse compared to top-tier programs such as Boston College or Florida, the squad led by Hall of Fame coach Jenny Levy has achieved titles with smaller budgets than recent champions. Cunningham attributes the team's success to efficient spending, a strong ACC league, and the university's attractive student body.

  1. The win by the University of North Carolina's women's lacrosse team will aid in the analysis of the impact of winning championships in Olympic sports on education, self-development, and career-development, as it demonstrates the university as a great place to come and play.
  2. As part of its strategy to build endowments for Olympic sports like lacrosse, UNC will likely extend its fundraising efforts towards education-and-self-development programs and career-development initiatives to attract more donors, capitalizing on the success of the women's lacrosse team.
  3. The increase in donations gained from successful Olympic sports like women's lacrosse will assist in expanding sports offerings, potentially leading to the addition of new programs, such as football, further enriching the overall education and sports experiences for UNC students.
