Thuringia's universities have welcomed a total of 7,039 new students for the winter semester, with varying trends across institutions. IU International University of Applied Sciences, the largest in Thuringia with over 100,000 students nationwide, enrolled 4,981 first-year students this semester. Meanwhile, Erfurt University of Applied Sciences saw a 15% jump, enrolling 1,389 news students. Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena recorded a significant rise with 950 first-year students, a 20% increase. University of Erfurt saw nearly stable figures with 1,046 freshmen starting their degrees, an increase of 94 compared to the previous year. Ilmenau Technical University stands out for its exceptionally high proportion of international students, with over 60% of new enrollments holding foreign citizenship. Franz Liszt School of Music Weimar has roughly half of its 171 new students coming from abroad. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar reported that 29% of its 851 first-years are international.
