1,500 Euros for the best school library - Applications possible - Thuringia's Top School Libraries Compete for Innovation and Engagement Awards

Schools across Thuringia are being encouraged to apply for the 'Most Engaged School Library Award'. The competition, now open for entries, aims to reward innovative projects that get students reading. With nearly 500 school libraries in the region, the initiative highlights their role in education and media literacy.

The award celebrates libraries that create engaging ways to promote reading. Education Minister Christian Tischner has stressed how these spaces help students develop strong reading habits and responsible media use. Each participating school library offers around 1.3 million books, digital resources, and other media, serving over 44,000 students monthly.

Applications will be accepted until April 24. The top three entries will receive cash prizes: €1,500 for first place, €1,000 for second, and €500 for third. While exact figures for similar competitions nationwide are unclear, the Vorlesewettbewerb—a major reading contest—hosts over 650 regional events each year, involving around 600,000 students.

Thuringia's libraries play a key role in supporting young readers. The award seeks to spotlight those making the biggest impact through creativity and dedication.

The winning schools will be announced after the submission deadline. The prizes will fund further projects to boost student engagement with books and media. Organisers hope the competition will inspire more schools to develop their library programmes.
