In Thuringia, employment trends reveal a shift in men's roles and a rise in part-time work. Currently, around 791,000 people are employed, with over 53 percent being men. The number of employed men has risen significantly over the past decade, while women's employment has remained largely stable.
Men in Thuringia are increasingly represented in social professions such as service, healthcare, childcare, and education. This sector has seen a growth from 19,000 men in 2014 to 27,000 today. Among employed men, 99,000 work as specialists or experts, and 68,000 hold assistant-level positions.
Part-time work among men has also increased, with numbers rising from 31,000 a decade ago to 44,000 today. However, unemployment among men remains higher than among women, with an average annual unemployment rate of 6.6 percent for men compared to 5.9 percent for women in 2024. Four out of ten unemployed men lack vocational qualifications, often leading to longer periods of unemployment.
Thuringia's employment landscape shows a growing trend of men in social professions and part-time work. Despite this, unemployment among men remains a challenge, particularly for those without vocational qualifications. The rise in part-time work suggests a shift in work-life balance preferences among men.
