Thuringia Remains Behind in Physician Density Nationwide - Thuringia's doctor shortage deepens as workforce ages and trends shift
Thuringia faces a shifting medical landscape, with a growing share of female doctors and an ageing workforce. The state has one of Germany's lowest physician densities, yet some cities, like Weimar, buck the trend with unusually high numbers of general practitioners. Meanwhile, concerns grow over young doctors avoiding private practice and choosing part-time roles instead.
Since 2010, Germany's total number of licensed doctors has climbed steadily. Figures from the Federal Medical Association show a rise from around 337,000 in 2010 to over 430,000 by 2024. The sharpest increases occurred in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia, each seeing growth of 30% or more. By 2025, the number of practicing physicians nationwide reached 191,875.
In Thuringia, however, the picture is mixed. The state has just 214 physicians and psychotherapists per 100,000 residents—one of the lowest rates in the country. Yet Weimar stands out with 89.5 GPs per 100,000 people, far above the state average of 68.1. Women now make up 58% of Thuringia's medical professionals, a higher proportion than in most other federal states. The workforce is also ageing. The average doctor in Thuringia is 52.9 years old, and only 10% of physicians and psychotherapists are over 65. Nationwide, 40% of doctors work part-time, a trend that worries industry leaders. Andreas Gassen, head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, has highlighted the risks of young doctors preferring employment over starting their own practices.
Thuringia's medical sector reflects broader national changes: more doctors overall, but fewer in private practice and a rising share working reduced hours. With an ageing workforce and uneven distribution of GPs, the state must address these challenges to ensure long-term healthcare access. The data suggests a need for targeted policies to attract and retain doctors in underserved areas.
