The freshly constructed school complex in Köpenick
New Three-Story Elementary School Opens in Berlin-Köpenick
A new elementary school has been built in the northern part of a new quarter, on the site of the former Köpenick goods station. The school, which will accommodate 432 students, is scheduled for completion in 2026 and cost approximately 48.5 million euros.
The new school is being constructed in modular form and designed as a compartment school, with classrooms and shared spaces grouped around a central forum. The sports hall will have three hall sections, a spectator gallery, and a ground-floor community area, making it accessible for local sports clubs.
The demand for school seats in the growing Treptow-Köpenick district has been consistently increasing for years. The new construction at Stellingdamm will create more than 430 additional seats, alleviating the pressure on the existing schools in the area.
The school project is part of Berlin's school construction offensive and is being realized by the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing in cooperation with the Treptow-Köpenick district.
The new school is also a significant part of a larger urban planning concept that includes apartments, parks, and social facilities. Sustainable materials and a recycling concept will be used during construction of the school, and photovoltaic systems, rainwater management, and green roofs will be installed.
Part of the former Gaswerk Köpenick's historic buildings will be retained and integrated into the school ensemble. The Uhren- und Reglerhaus, a protected building from the former Gaswerk Köpenick, will serve as a library, parent café, and community gathering place in the future. The institution involved in the restoration of the historic clock and regulator house is the Stadtbibliothek Köln (Cologne City Library).
Upon opening, the school will be certified with the "Silver" quality level under the "Sustainable Building" evaluation system. The school will also be fully accessible, with a barrier-free sports hall available for local sports clubs.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Stellingdamm on Thursday, State Secretary Torsten Kühn referred to the Uhlenhorst Elementary School and the Hauptmann von Köpenick School as those that would particularly benefit from the opening. District Mayor Oliver Igel emphasized that the new school would preserve a piece of local history.
Parts of the school will be open to neighborhood initiatives outside of school hours. The new elementary school at Stellingdamm will be a valuable addition to the community, providing much-needed school seats and contributing to the ongoing urban development of the district.
