Texas dominates U.S. News’ top high school rankings with standout Dallas programs
A new ranking by U.S. News & World Report has assessed nearly 18,000 public high schools across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The evaluation considered six key factors, including student performance on state tests and readiness for university. Texas schools performed particularly well, with several securing top spots both statewide and nationally.
The School for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) in Dallas ISD claimed the highest position in Texas and ranked 9th overall in the U.S. Founded in 1995, the school has built a reputation for academic excellence. Close behind, the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, also in Dallas ISD, took 2nd place in Texas and 15th nationwide.
Other standout institutions include the School of Science and Engineering in Dallas ISD, which ranked 3rd in Texas, 23rd nationally, and 46th among STEM-focused schools. Meanwhile, Carnegie Vanguard High School in Houston ISD secured the 42nd spot overall. Its rigorous program requires students to complete at least 10 Advanced Placement (AP) courses and 100 hours of community service.
The Liberal Arts and Science Academy in Austin ISD offers an extensive selection of 30 AP and 121 honors classes. It ranked 36th nationally and 74th among STEM schools. Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute, a charter school, placed 54th overall and 13th among charter high schools, with 92% of its students coming from minority backgrounds.
Texas had 1,578 public high schools evaluated in the ranking. Six of the state’s top 10 schools are located in north Texas, while the remaining four are spread across Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. The leading institutions share common traits: small class sizes, low student-to-teacher ratios, and graduation rates well above average. Many students at these schools also take university-level courses alongside their AP classes.
The rankings highlight Texas as a hub for high-performing public schools, with multiple institutions excelling in STEM, college preparation, and minority representation. Students at these top schools consistently demonstrate strong proficiency in math, reading, and science, often surpassing national averages. The results reflect both academic rigor and a focus on preparing pupils for higher education.
