Temple’s Medical School Renames DEI Office Amid Ongoing Criticism

Temple University’s Katz School of Medicine has rebranded its diversity, equity, and inclusion centre under a new name, the Office of Strategic Partnership in Healthcare Education and Resources, or SPHERE. The change comes as the institution faces ongoing criticism over its DEI policies. A recent report even gave the school a low grade for its approach to these issues. The medical school’s former Office of Health Equity, Diversity & Inclusion is now called the Office of Strategic Partnership in Healthcare Education and Resources, or SPHERE. Despite the name change, the school has stated that its core work—education, training, and community partnerships—will remain unchanged. Officials have also emphasised an expanded commitment to advancing equity across the institution. The school’s DEI efforts will now operate under the SPHERE name. The shift reflects broader debates over equity initiatives in medical education. Meanwhile, outside groups continue to monitor the institution’s policies and practices.
