Teachers accused of removing Kirk memorial; authorities launch inquiry in Villa Park

A teacher at Villa Park High School in California is under investigation after allegedly removing and discarding a student-made memorial honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The memorial was initially placed at an outdoor amphitheater inside the campus, near a memorial for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The incident came to light after a photo showed a woman, identified as a teacher, removing the memorial materials and placing them in her car. The materials were later found in an off-campus dumpster. The school district is investigating the matter, but the name of the teacher has not been made public in official reports.

The memorial was partly restored after administrators located missing items. It was moved to a public sidewalk in front of the school at the suggestion of an administrator. A student government leader, Alex Tran, believes the removal of the memorial was vandalism and a violation of students' right to free speech.

Tran, who is about to begin college at UC Davis, said, "This memorial was a way for us to express our condolences and pay our respects to someone who had a significant impact on our lives." Two of the three student organizers requested anonymity due to concerns about online notoriety and potential impact on future opportunities.

The school district did not confirm the identity of the individual or whether the teacher had been asked to leave campus. However, the superintendent confirmed that the memorial artifacts were located "off campus" and then brought back so the memorial could be set up again.

The incident comes amid a string of disciplinary actions against employees nationwide who were accused of cheering Kirk's assassination. Monárrez, the school district's superintendent, stated that the removal of the memorial was not condoned and the district is trying to focus on educational outcomes for children.

Monárrez also explained that if an employee receives a warning letter, that level of discipline would remain confidential. He added that if more serious consequences were to be imposed, such as suspension or termination, these would require the school board's ratification.

A 17-year-old senior at the school said he wanted to host something at the school after Kirk's passing. A 16-year-old junior at the school thought the memorial was "really cool" because he related to Kirk, being a religious person.

The school board would have to ratify more serious consequences that would affect pay or employment. Monárrez said that when an employee does something improper, there is typically "progressive discipline," which takes into account the seriousness of the offense along with a person's employment history.

As the investigation continues, the school community is divided over the incident. Some students and parents are calling for the teacher to be fired, while others are advocating for understanding and forgiveness. The school district has not yet announced any decisions regarding the teacher's employment status.
