Switzerland's Education Report reveals funding cuts despite high employer support

Switzerland's latest Education Report has been released, offering a detailed overview of the country's education system. Published every four years, the report examines trends, challenges, and funding in both formal and further education. This year's findings arrive as budget cuts threaten support for adult learning. The report reveals that over 90% of employees pursuing further education receive financial or practical support. More than 75% of companies contribute by covering training costs or allowing professional development during work hours. Despite this, many still avoid further education due to time constraints, family responsibilities, and high expenses.

Originally, the Federal Council proposed scrapping contributions for further education entirely. However, after parliamentary pushback, funding will continue—though at a reduced level starting next year. Tiana Moser, a Zurich member of the Council of States for the Green Liberal Party, stressed the need for sustained funding. She argued that it keeps people in the workforce and helps address the skilled labour shortage.

Federal President and Economics Minister Guy Parmelin welcomed the report as a tool for evidence-based decisions. He highlighted its importance in guiding policy, particularly when budgets are tight. The report also calls for closer monitoring of corporate involvement in education to ensure ongoing support. The Education Report underscores persistent barriers to further education, with lack of support remaining a key issue. While funding will decrease from next year, it will not disappear entirely. The findings aim to shape future policies and maintain access to learning opportunities across Switzerland.
