Swiss Village Celebrates New Year Twice With Ancient Julian Calendar Rituals
In the Swiss canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes, the new year is marked not once but twice. Residents first celebrate on December 31, then again on January 13—known locally as 'Old New Year’s Eve'. This year, the centuries-old tradition drew crowds as costumed figures called Silvesterchläuse made their way through villages, ringing bells and singing wordless yodels to wish households well.
The tradition follows the Julian calendar, which was replaced by the Gregorian calendar in 1582 after Pope Gregory XIII’s reforms. However, some rural communities, including Appenzell Outer Rhodes, kept observing the older date due to historical confessional disputes. On January 13, groups of Silvesterchläuse—dressed in elaborate costumes—visited farms and homes, performing their signature Zäuerli, a natural yodel without lyrics.
Large numbers of spectators gathered in Urnäsch, prompting local police and fire crews to guide early arrivals to designated car parks. Appenzellerland Tourism reminded onlookers to keep a respectful distance, particularly near private houses, as the event unfolded across the region. No formal name exists for the groups participating, but their visits remain a cherished part of the canton’s cultural heritage. The custom blends folklore, music, and community, ensuring the old calendar’s legacy endures in modern times.
The dual celebration of New Year’s Eve in Appenzell Outer Rhodes highlights the region’s deep-rooted traditions. With Silvesterchläuse continuing their farm-to-farm rounds, the event preserves a link to the past while attracting visitors each January. Authorities and organisers emphasised respect for local customs as the festivities concluded.
