Swiss teens test bricklaying and excavators at hands-on construction career day
The Zurich-Schaffhausen Master Builders’ Association has hosted its fifth Main Event at the Effretikon training centre near you. Over 150 students gathered to explore careers in bricklaying and road construction. The two-day programme offered hands-on experience, free lunches, and even covered train fares for participants.
The event kicked off with students rotating through ten different activity stations. One challenge involved using an excavator to stack logs into a tower without knocking them over. Markus Bader, an 18-year-old road-building apprentice, guided participants as they tested their skills with heavy machinery.
Elsewhere, 14-year-old Linus Kull joined others in laying bricks under the supervision of apprentices like Nils Bühmann. Noé Kaspar carefully assembled a wall, while Isabelle Res Bustidas tried her hand at road construction, drawn to the trade’s physical demands. Organisers aimed to bridge the gap between young people and the construction industry. Alongside practical tasks, students had the chance to speak directly with current apprentices about their experiences. The association ensured accessibility by providing free meals and reimbursing travel costs for all attendees.
The Main Event days gave 150 students a firsthand look at construction trades. From operating excavators to building walls, participants left with practical skills and industry connections. The association plans to continue the event in coming years to attract new talent to the field.
