Malzfabrik Niemberg - Students Explore Lost Place - Students revive a forgotten malt factory’s story through film and history
A neglected malt factory in Niemberg has become the focus of a student-led project to document forgotten landmarks. The crumbling building, once a key industrial site, now stands empty after decades of abandonment. Three students have captured its story in a short film, hoping to preserve its fading history.
Benedikt Kupski, Nico Hoppensack, and Justin Dawid created the film as part of the Making Sachsen-Anhalt’s Lost Places Visible Together initiative. Their research uncovered old photos and postcards showing the factory’s past—first as a production hub, then briefly as a naval arms depot after German reunification.
The students’ film highlights a blind spot in Niemberg’s history, ensuring the malt factory’s legacy isn’t completely lost. Their work joins a growing effort to document and share the stories of Sachsen-Anhalt’s abandoned industrial sites. The digital map now offers a way for others to explore these fading landmarks.
