Annual German-French Reading Competition in Neuss Celebrates 60 Years of Friendship

The city of Neuss, Germany, recently hosted the annual German-French Reading Competition, a longstanding cultural event promoting mutual understanding and linguistic skills between German and French youth.

This year's competition, under the patronage of Mayor Reiner Breuer, brought together 17 candidates from the 2nd year of learning, showcasing their reading abilities in both languages. The event was organized by Magda Holzberg from the German-French Cultural Circle Neuss, along with Annette Lohkamp, Lilli Käfer, and Helga Schwarze from the city library, with sponsorship from Hitch Cinema, the Book House at the Minster, and the city of Neuss.

The jury, composed of German-French representatives, evaluated the participants' performance based on pronunciation, expression, and interpretation. The competition's purpose was to encourage students to develop their reading and language abilities, fostering bilingualism and cultural exchange.

Mayor Breuer personally honoured the participants, teachers, jury, and organizers, and even read a section of the upper school text in French, which was greeted by the audience with enthusiastic applause. Liliane Loegel and Geneviève Quinaud addressed all participants in a short speech in French.

A special thanks was given to the dedicated French teachers who prepared and accompanied their students for the competition. All candidates received a certificate and a small gift, made possible by generous donations from Neuss sponsors.

The competition concluded with a heartfelt thank you to all involved, and the organizers expressed their hope that many students will participate again in the competition next year. They also announced that the Concours de Lecture in German will take place in the partner city of Châlons-en-Champagne in January 2024.

The German-French Reading Competition in Neuss is a testament to the 60-year-old German-French friendship, sealed in the Élysée Treaty in 1963. The event highlights the importance of language for relations with the French neighbor and serves as a platform for cultural exchange and linguistic development among young people.
