Notre Dame Hosts Exciting Trinity Cup Debating Competition for Young Debaters

The University of Notre Dame Australia recently played host to the annual Trinity Cup debating competition, a renowned event that encourages productive discussions about complex topics among university teams. This year, the competition saw 28 year 9 and 10 students from various schools engage in debates on thought-provoking questions.

The day-long event, held on June 22, was judged by Nick Chandley from DialogueWorks and David Ellis from Leeds Trinity University. The competition, sponsored by Leeds Trinity University, was a platform for these young debaters to showcase their skills and knowledge.

In the individual Stella Maris prize competition, a student from St John Fisher Catholic High School, Harrogate, was awarded for virtue. Meanwhile, the team trophy was won by Holy Family Catholic High School, Carlton.

Nick Chandley, impressed by the pupils' ability to collaborate and have insightful discussions, stated that he could have awarded every participant for their involvement in the debates. The judges were particularly impressed with the students' maturity and understanding of the complex topics at hand.

The questions debated during the competition included 'Do you have to be strict to be a good parent?', 'Does science or religion give a better explanation of where the universe came from?', and 'Does a "proper" Christian have to be poor?'. These questions not only challenged the students' debating skills but also their critical thinking abilities.
