State Investigation Launched into Hiring of Undocumented Superintendent in Des Moines
A state-level investigation has begun into the hiring of Ian Roberts as superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. Iowa Rep. Zach Nunn confirmed this news, following Roberts' detention by ICE agents last week.
Roberts, who entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999, received a final order of removal in May 2024. He was detained due to this order and lack of work authorization. ICE revealed that Roberts was in possession of a loaded handgun and $3,000 in cash at the time of his detention.
Roberts provided documentation stating he was a U.S. citizen and had a Social Security card when applying for the superintendent position. However, his attorney is now seeking to revoke the removal order and reopen the case, which could potentially change the legal situation.
The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has revoked Roberts' administrator license. The Des Moines School Board has placed him on unpaid administrative leave and demanded proof of work authorization. Roberts will resign from his position, his attorney announced.
The investigation into Ian Roberts' hiring is ongoing, with potential implications for the Des Moines Public Schools district. Roberts' detention and the subsequent revelations have led to his resignation and the revocation of his administrator license.
